The Masters Golf Tournament Format

from: http://mastersgolf.quick-facts.info

Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones, who designed Augusta National Golf course with legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie, started the Masters.

It is every male professional golfer's dream to be invited to play in The Masters Golf Tournament. Unlike the other three majors, The US Open, The British Open, and The PGA Championship, The Masters is always played at the same location, the private Augusta National Golf Club, in Augusta, Georgia, USA. The Masters is the first major golf tournament each year.

Without a doubt, The Masters is considered the best organized golf tournament in the world. Tournament officials keep a strict eye on fans and patrons. Napkins for patrons are dyed grass green so that dropped napkins will not show on TV. You will go through airport-like security gates to get into the course. And NO ONE gets in without a badge that is electronically scanned for accuracy. There are lists of banned items that can be brought onto the course. If by rare chance you get to attend, make sure you follow the policies or you will be banned from the course.

The final golf round is scheduled for the second Sunday in April each year. The tournament is a 72 hole, four day event starting on Thursday, with practice days Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There are no qualifying rounds.

Tuesday night there is a Champions dinner for all former Masters champions that is hosted by the previous year's champion. The host has input on the menu selections.

The highlight on Wednesday is a par three tournament that has become wildly popular. The contest takes place on Augusta National's The Par 3 course. The tournament participants, past champions and Honorary Invitees are invited to participate.

The players are relaxed, joking and kidding around with each other and the audience. They know it is their last chance to relax before the main event the next day. It has become the golf fans favorite because the players joke around with each other, showing their fun side. They also have their pictures made with fans and sign autographs. Some players bring their children and let them caddy or putt.

Thursday, the first round of the official tournament starts. Because the Masters has fewer players when compared to other golf tournaments, groups are set to a size of three players for the first 36 holes, typically Thursday and Friday.

After all players have played 36 holes, a cut is made. Players who 'make the cut' are in one or both of the following two categories:
1. Lowest 44 scores plus ties
2. Within 10 strokes of the lowest 36 hole score (set by the leader).

After the first two rounds, players are paired up for play, usually by score standings.

The Masters is known for its fickle weather. There is almost always a rain shower or thunderstorm to heighten the stakes. Just as the players get used to the greens being super short and fast, along comes a rain shower making them sluggish and slow with the moisture.

With a total purse worth over $7 million in 2006, The Masters could finance a golfer for the season and secure his career.
