Who Gets to Play in The Masters Golf Tournament?
from: http://mastersgolf.quick-facts.infoOf the four major professional men's golf tournaments, The Masters is by far the most prestigious. Its roster reads like the Who's Who of golf. Only the very best get to play. It is the statement to the world that you have, indeed, reached the very top of your game.
The Masters golf tournament has the smallest number of players of the other major tournaments, topping out at around ninety. The PGA (Professional Golf Association) does not determine who plays and who does not.
The players are invited to participate by a Masters Committee at the Augusta National Golf Club, making it an invitations-only tournament.
The Masters Committee chooses players based upon strict criteria. The top fifty (50) players in the Official World Golf Rankings are usually invited to play, along with the winners of other well known golf tournaments. The past champions of The Masters are always eligible to play, as well, making this golf tournament truly one for only the Masters of golf.
From the official Masters website, Invitation categories (as of 2007) include:
1. Masters Tournament Champions
2. US Open Champions
3. British Open Champions
4. PGA Champions
5. Winners of The Players Championship (2005 and 2006)
6. Current US Amateur Champion
- Runner-up to the current US Amateur Champion
7. Current British Amateur Champion
8. Current US Amateur Public Links Champion
9. Current US Mid-Amateur Champion
10. The first 16 players, including ties, in the previous year’s Masters Tournament

12. The first 4 players, including ties, in the previous year’s British Open
13. The first 4 players, including ties, in the previous year’s PGA Championship
14. The 40 leaders on the Final Official PGA Tour Money List for the previous calendar year
15. The 10 leaders on the Official PGA Tour Money List published during the week prior to the current Masters Tournament
16. The 50 leaders on the Final Official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year
17. The 50 leaders on the Official World Golf Ranking published during the week prior to the current Masters Tournament
A listing of this year's invitees can be found at the official Masters website.
The Masters Committee also invites some international players that do not otherwise qualify, if they choose to.
Masters champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors for the next five years, and earn a lifetime invitation to the Masters. They also receive membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and invitations to The Players Championship for five years.
