The Green Jacket - The Masters Tournament
from: www.mastersgolf.quick-facts.infoThe Masters golf tournament is all about skill, prestige and accomplishment. It is the dream of every professional golfer to play in this tournament. One exceptional player will be the champion and will be awarded a Masters green jacket. What is the significance of this green coat?
Starting with Sam Snead in 1949, the winner of The Masters has been awarded a distinctive green jacket along with the cash award. The green coat is actually the official coat worn by members of The Augusta National Golf Club while they are on the club grounds so members can be readily identified. The jacket has the club's logo on the left breast and signifies an honorary membership induction into the exclusive, private club as one of the prizes for winning The Masters.
The green jacket is one of the most coveted awards among professional golfers because of the prestige it signifies. The champion is now a member of Augusta National Golf Club, which has only about 300 all male members. Membership to this exclusive club is by invitation only. They do not offer an application process, making a membership even more elusive.
The green jacket is part of the official uniform of all Augusta National Golf Club members. The Masters champion can take it home with him for a year. He will then return it at the next Masters tournament where it will remain on site and be available for him to wear when he visits the club.
Only the reigning champion is allowed to take his green jacket from the club. However, in 1961, Gary Player did not return his jacket but kept it with him in spite of the club's insistence that he return it. So far, he is the only exception to this rule.
Before the tournament, each player is measured for their jacket size so the correct size will be available to him if he wins.
The previous year's Masters champion presents the green jacket to the current year's winner in an elaborate ceremony now televised around the world. It is the crowning moment in the life of the professional golfer that everyone enjoys and looks forward to.
